Growing The Veg Box

The “Growing The Veg Box” project grows and distributes high quality, low cost fruit and vegetables to people and businesses in Torfaen. We are constantly expanding the project and looking to diversify into other areas. We now have a Fruit & Veg shop at our veg box community hub in Garndiffaith, we hold cookery classes, run school satellite projects and now sell willow huts, hanging baskets, flowers, herbs and much more!

The veg box project was initially set up to enable the communities in the Abersychan ward and surrounding areas to have access to fresh fruit and vegetables at an affordable price. The project has been successful and the customer base well established and it was recognised that the project had the potential to expand and diversify into other areas.

In the summer of 2009 funding was successfully obtained through the BIG Lottery, Environment Wales, Torfaen Borough Council and The Heads of The Valley fund. A partnership agreement between Garnsychan and CoStar Partnerships was set up to deliver the whole project which allowed for the employment of a Project Coordinator, Project Assistant/Driver and a Gardening Assistant in August 2009 who have been working together to expand the project.

We use local suppliers for the majority of our orders and supplement the bags with top quality home grown produce which is grown at our growing stations by local gardeners volunteers, schools, and placement workers. This reduces the foods carbon footprint from “Farm to fork”. We also aim to increase our drop off points with local businesses, again further reducing the carbon footprint.
